Creating Daily Rituals with Incense Sticks
In Japan, the art of appreciating incense is known as kōdō. The practice is described as listening to the fragrance. Even something as simple as lighting incense after you wake up could be a productive way to create a small self-care ritual. Noticing the scent can help set the tone for your day as you get dressed or make the bed.
And if your mornings are a little hectic? Maybe you want to burn your incense in the evening. It would create a calming atmosphere in the living room after you tuck the kids into bed. Or become a great addition to your own bedtime routine!
Most people find it pretty easy to light incense as a subtle “background” to their typical at-home lifestyle. It’s also the perfect complement to your existing self-care rituals. If you already practice meditation or yoga, why not add some incense to the mix? The same goes for any work you might do with your crystals and stones. Taking a hot bath is another great ritual. You can match the fragrance of your incense to the essential oils in your tub.

Since there are so many types of incense, you’ll probably discover that you like certain varieties best for different activities or the time of day. Personally, I like the traditional fragrances of Nag Champa and Patchouli. As far as brands go, though, my favorite is INCA incense. Their quality is fantastic, and I love all of the fragrances in their line. Of course, it’s all a matter of preference. Just like choosing your crystals, there’s no wrong way to go about using incense.
Our most popular brand of incense happens to be Green Tree. We sell a ton of the 7 Chakras fragrance, the Mother Earth fragrance, and the Palo Santo fragrance. Checking out any of those best-sellers (or my personal picks above!) could be a great first step to building your own incense practice.
You can light incense during times of uncertainty for more balance. You can also use incense to cleanse the energy of the space where you’ve placed your crystals. Of course, you can also use incense for nothing more than wanting a nicely scented room. I hope you give these ideas a try for your own sort of ritual—and have fun!
